History is written with a collection of stories.

In 2015, Sandeman celebrated its 225th Anniversary. Their pioneering spirit in the wine business has been unprecedented, with a permanent attitude of innovation and creativity towards its products and the business itself. Always true to its History, Heritage and Legacy, Sandeman is still true to itself and is now not only 225 years old, but also 225 years strong.

Selling no less than an average of 18 bottles per minute, Sandeman is one of the biggest producers in the Porto wine business, constantly thriving to improve its premium perception, with exclusive products that are a testament to its quality.

When they called VOLTA to help them celebrate their anniversary, they asked not only for a premium perception in every material produced but also for us to develop a concept that truly explained the brand’s history and attitude. In close collaboration, we decided to create 6 stories, that together tell the story of The House of Sandeman’s 225-year-old success and commitment to quality.

Agency: The Collected Works
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: EMEFE
Location: New York, USA
Packaging Contents: Vinyl Record
Packaging Materials: Paper, Vinyl

EMEFE is an 8 piece band hailing from Brooklyn. Their debut self-titled album chops up sound and experiments with the concept of tension and release throughout the record. They've also used a mix of digital and analog techniques to hide and reveal musical patterns. We were lucky enough to design all their packaging, using the same concept of organic and digital manipulation to create the artwork.

The front and back of the vinyl sleeve was created by writing some code in Processing. This allowed us to generate black and white patterns and typography–which were based on natural growth patterns, such as those in coral and tree branches. By using this technique we could use the software to generate different artwork for different elements the band would need, such as the interior sleeve, apparel, stickers, tour posters and announcements. In the end, it created an aesthetic that felt appropriate for the music and had a bit of unexpectedness to everything.

Loving Earth

Agency: Round
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Loving Earth
Packaging Content: Chocolate
Location: Australia

Loving Earth’s brand philosophy is simple: be healthy, be sustainable and be fair.

Loving Earth had been an early leader in the organic food movement. Since launching in 2007, the brand had developed a loyal following from consumers and in the aisles of their stockists. Yet, while their following was cultish, their broader commercial cut-through was not. By 2014, the notion of organic had become prevalent, organic products pervaded the market and simply adhering to an organic philosophy was not enough to ensure sustainable success. What had worked for Loving Earth since their inception – a quirky brand centred on care and community – needed to be rethought as they looked to expand both their retail presence and product range.

For us, it was clear that the packaging and visual elements of the brand needed an over-haul. As the organic industry had grown up, it had cleverly aligned itself with the fine-food market. The challenge we set the company internally was to reposition Loving Earth to enter that fine-food market, while still retaining all of the heritage, spirit and love that the brand had always embodied.

From an execution perspective, our response was quite simple. As we reimagined the chocolate packaging, we took an illustrative approach that saw the development of individual characters that played an important role on the packaging by both denoting what was actually in each product and giving them a human touch. The result was a series of packaging that physically materialised the core nature of the brand, while catapulting Loving Earth into the heart of the fine-food market category.
