This packaging is a premium box for a watch. It is a very simple conception which underlines a smart and stylish product. The desiegners resigned from printing and replaced it by another action. However the packaging still looks very impressive. The insert placed inside of the box does not look like usual insert used to hold the watch. Design: Nik and Carole
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Humdinger Foods
Location: Manchester, UK
Packaging Contents: Milled Seeds
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Plastic Pouch
Printing Process: Flexography

A positive way to make a difference everyday.

THE CHALLENGE
Milled seeds are truly mighty, packed full of nutrients and vitamins, but the market was blinding customers with science. Their appeal was still niche because customers weren’t sure how and when they should be using them.

THE CUSTOMER
Busy lifestyles, fussy eaters, unrealistic expectations make healthy eating a minefield. So if ‘Yum & Yay’ was going to succeed, it had to slot into customers’ lives. We needed to show them that a spoonful of Yum and Yay was all they needed. Stirred, sprinkled, blended or simply used to top their favourite food and drinks.

THE RESULT
A refreshingly honest and positive brand, that has an inclusive ‘can do’ attitude. No fuss, no faff, just a naturally easy way to say YES to healthy. With listings in Sainsbury’s nationwide and promising early sales, Yum & Yay look to make a positive difference to our everyday lives.

MAKING IT HAPPEN
‘Nik & Carole have been brilliant in helping to create a new brand. They very quickly immersed themselves in the business understanding our challenges with this new brand. They have so much passion for what they do which comes through in their work. They have become a very trusted part of our business in a short space of time” Anne Wareing Innovation and marketing manager at Humdinger Foods.

Herbária

Design: Klaudia Márton
Project Type: Student Project
School: Corvin Artschool
Course: Graphic Design
Tutor: Judit Tóth, András Gosztom
Location: Budapest, Hungary
Packaging Contents: Herbal cosmetics
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Paper, cardboard, glass bottle
Printing Process: Digital printing

HISTORY
Herbária was established in 1949 to collect, produce, process and trade medicinal plants and to manufacture herbal teas. As a result of the continuous product range widening from the 70’s now several types of teas and tea mixtures both in bags and in filter bags, essential oils, cosmetic products for hair, body, face and mouth care and also natural food are offered.

Today Herbária Co. is one of the leading companies in the herbal product sector in Hungary.

RE-DESIGN
My chosen project is the re-design of HERBÁRIA’s image and packaging. It involves several elements, like the logo, labels, business cards amongst others for the 100% natural and healthy Hungarian products.

BRAND
The aim with the project is to establish a modern and eco-conscious brand that represents pure, organic, herbal-based and phytochemical quality products for a company with several decades of usage and manufacturing experience, produced within ethical and environmental-friendly condition, without involving any animal testing.

The new identity needs to follow a philosophy that is relevant not only the Hungarian, but the international market as well.

PACKAGING
With the re-designed packaging amongst the product range, I would like to put the emphasis on the cosmetical products and elevate them to mid-high position on the market, showing the international standard quality which not only mediates value with the ingredients and the manufacturing technology, but also with the new design and form wherein it comes.

It is crucial to take into consideration that the repacked products should reach out for younger customers, preserving the extant clients as well. Besides, it is essential to define cost-efficient prices, so the new design would not be unrealistically expensive compared to the current priceing.

I created the final design with a basic unit, that can store various sizes of goods with different inner shapes. Depending on the specific product, the box can be used either in horizontal or vertical position.

2 UNITS
The size of the basic box is 15*6*8 cm. The inner shapes – or inner templates – are variable, according to the different dimensions of the specific product lines. These two elements of the packaging enables the diversity of the inner contents, without any need for changing the size or the shape of the basic box.

TruSeed Identity

Design: Jessica Hord
Project Type: Student Project
School: Ball State University
Tutor: Fred Bower
Location: Muncie, Indiana
Packaging Contents: Plant seeds
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Wildflower Seed Paper
Printing Process: Digital Printing

Inspiration:
After reading the book Eco Packaging Now by Peng Chong and Tony Ibbotson, I was really eager to work with sustainable materials in my design work. I chose to create an identity system and packaging for a fictitious biodegradable seed packaging brand.

Research:
After reading Eco Packaging Now I was well-versed in all types of eco packaging from biodegradable to recyclable, but I needed to find the perfect paper for my seed packaging brand. I researched many different types of degradable paper and decided on the Plant Me Seed Paper in premium white with visible wildflower seeds. After selecting the wildflower seed paper, I went through the process of finding the encouraged amount of sun, planting depth, temperature, and amount of water for each kind of plant I wanted to make available.

Identity Design:
I decided on the name TruSeed because I wanted the name of the product to embody the purpose of the brand I created. The product is truly just seeds. To symbolize the straightforward honesty of the brand, I went with a clean sans-serif typeface a simple black and grey color palette.

Packaging:
For the packaging, I wanted to create a simple design that wouldn't distract from the beautiful colors in the wildflower seed paper. The simpler design uses less ink, creates less waste, and makes the packaging stand out against all of the other seed packages on the shelf. I designed a packaging shape that was different from normal seed packages.

Collaborating with local illustrator, Marcella Wylie we coupled playful, loose fruit illustrations with clean monochrome typography. We wanted to enhance the premium, adult quality of the brand, yet still honour its honest approach and heritage.

Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Olive Poem
Location: Athens, Greece
Packaging Contents: Olive Oil

Olive Poem is a single estate extra virgin olive oil extracted from the earth of Vrontamas in Lakonia, Greece. Meaning to differentiate itself and stand out for its fine character thanks to its natural ingredients and pure production processes, it sought for a packaging that would tell its story with an artistic and mystical essence.

The main request was to create a premium-quality brand identity, addressing people with high nutrition and taste standards, who are truly concerned about the quality and purity of their alimentation. Acquiring a luxury and mostly artistic sense, the packaging was required to differentiate itself in a market full of good-looking, yet low-quality, competition.

Photography: Duotone, Juho Huttunen
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Location: Helsinki, Finland
Packaging Contents: Ice cream
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Carton/paper
Printing Process: Flexography, pantone colour

A vibrant makeover to help a beloved brand conquer international markets.

At its launch in 2012, 3 Kaverin Jäätelö (3 Friends Ice Cream) was the first craft ice cream brand in Finland. Since then, this company founded by 3 passionate ice cream lovers has been the forerunner in the Finnish ice cream scene. Just like true friends 3 Kaveria ice cream doesn’t keep secrets. It’s made from only good and natural ingredients, so there’s no reason to explain or hide anything.

Our mission was to better reflect the great quality of the product, strongly communicate the philosophy behind the taste and, most importantly, increase credibility to support sales in international markets. We were briefed to make a design evolution instead of a revolution. That’s why we kept the iconic orange brand colour but tuned it just a little brighter.

To stand out better in the freezer we wanted the beloved brand name and number 3 to be more prominent in the visual identity. The typography of the rotating 3 KAVERIA text on the carton was inspired by the street signs in the ancient Italian town of Albenga and brought to life with a custom font.

Design: tds
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: American Wave UK Ltd
Location: United States
Packaging Contents: Tea
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Paper

The new packaging for tea should be radically different from competitors, attract attention with its original idea and leave a positive impression, such a task was expressed by the client.

It was decided to make an illustration on the front side of the box with the product, we decided to focus on the illustrations of birds, each of which has its own spotted color of feathers and a beautiful graceful silhouette , but something was missing, it was decided to Supplement the images of birds with clothes, shoes, accessories, so that each character got The packaging is not overloaded with graphic elements, the emphasis is on the character and the text of the name of the tea. On the front side there is a small window, through which you can see the product, visually assess its quality. Since the design uses non-standard elements for tea packaging, the window should facilitate the perception of the buyer and reveal the product.

Modern design, illustrated by the artist, gives the impression of exclusivity, because the collection of tea is handmade. This image of tea will emphasize the packaging on the shelf and add positive emotions on the kitchen table.

Packaging Substrate / Materials: Pouch

Little Freddie challenged us to rebrand their range of baby food to disrupt the category with stand out packaging that talks directly to parents, not babies.

Little Freddie is all about exceptional organic ingredients and no one beats them on the quality of ingredients. To get the best start in life children need to be educated about food and where it comes from. So we created the proposition ‘Growing the love of exceptional food’.

The packaging design was inspired by the art of plating food in restaurants. The child’s pen scribble mimics the puree techniques used by top chefs as the finishing touch to a plate. The love of food passed down to kids.

The result is a simple, emotive design that heroes the exceptional ingredients and makes shopping less confusing for parents.

Steel Bonnets - Blended Malt Whisky

Design: Hedley Mcewan
Creative: Philip Tait
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: The Lakes Distillery
Location: Newcastle, UK
Packaging Contents: Whisky
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Glass Bottle and Steel Tin
Printing Process: CMYK, Varnish, High Build, Foil, Glass Forming

The home of the Lakes Distillery is the Lake District National Park and World Heritage site in Cumbria. As Cumbria borders with Scotland, the idea began to form of creating a cross-border blend; a marriage of fine English and Scotch single malt whiskies. What was an original idea would indeed become a world first.

From the outset, we wished to create a brand and packaging design that reflected the rugged nature and toughness of the ’Steel Bonnets’ but also had a simple beauty and understated modernity.

The bottle itself is bespoke, a brand so unique had to have its own original bottle. An iconic image of a Border Reiver on his rearing Hobelar horse, wearing light armour and Morion helmet, with his ‘lang spear’ poised and ready to charge, is moulded in relief into the glass of the square shouldered bottle. This refracts ambient light, creating moving shadows and highlights that literally bring the horse and its rider to life.

The branding of ‘Steel Bonnets’ features this self same ‘lang spear’ which has been incorporated into the design to create a recognisable logo. The logo and associated labelling is deployed using a reflective steel-coloured foil.

Your bottle of ’Steel Bonnets’ whisky comes in a beautiful ‘steel case’, with embossed details and delicate patternation to represent the engraving commonly found on ‘Brigardine’ light armour of the period.

The pack is completed with a small yet highly informative document in black with reversed text. This sits beautifully in the black ‘flocked’ interior of the steel tin. The leaflet contains a concise history of the Border Reivers and the ’Steel Bonnets’ brand story.

The Mediterranean is what inspires the new line of hair products by Modesta Cassinello. Transmitting comfort and a botanical essence, they are aimed at men and women all around the world who find this kind of lifestyle appealing.

We set out with the aim of avoiding a static representation. We created a visual system with different layers which would allow for the inclusion of new future products, sets and merchandising of all kinds. To achieve this we based our work on a dynamic graphic system that revolved around the Mediterranean, which was possible to adapt to different physical and digital formats.

This cosmetic line is functional simple and effective, but at the same time it manages to transmit sensations which connect directly to the Mediterranean. We focused on the scenery, the land and the sea in order to achieve an aesthetic result which is both dynamic and colourful.
