Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Maior de Mendoza
Location: Madrid, Spain
Packaging Contents: Wine
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Glass bottle

Behind the evocative name of El Oasis lies a complex and elegant Albariño wine produced exclusively for British and American markets. The design process for these white wine labels was based on the search for a powerful icon that could encapsulate the brand in a simple way. A gold-stamped palm tree became the focus for capturing buyers’ attention. On a second level of communication we positioned a subtle embossing whose relief added several of the elements that make up our oasis: birds, the moon, and more palm trees.

The background color and texture of both premium and culinary grade are a different shade of green, each representative of the tea's color.

The tea is packaged in a matte gold airtight tin can with the Matcha Culture logo embossed on the lid.

Pedro Mandinga Rum is handmade in the heart of Panama City’s historic district. Pedro Mandinga was a legendary figure in Panama history who escaped slavery and he acted as a guide and partner to Sir Francis Drake. As legend goes, Mandinga showed Drake a secret lookout – a high tree “wherein 12 men could sit” – to see both the Caribbean and Pacific oceans. We built the brand story and package design around this unique gathering place, a metaphor for the hospitality and mingling of cultures that is the pride of Panama. The Carneros wine growing region is known for its chilly winds and fog – conditions that produce world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. “Carneros” means Ram in Spanish. We created a ram weathervane illustration, his long fur blowing in the wind, to tell the story of this brand’s terroir.

A rich teal label color and heavily embossed metallic ram introduce the core tier wines. For the reserve wines, we commissioned a cast metal embellishment, and paired it with a classic cream label featuring bottle numbering.

Design: Pavement Hester
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: El Paso Distilling & Spirits
Location: Oakland, USA
Packaging Contents: Vodka
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Glass
Printing Process: Digitial Printing

During the Prohibition era, many American distillers relocated their operations to the Mexican city of Juarez, located directly across the border from El Paso. Overnight, El Paso became a hub illegal alcohol trafficking, casinos and speakeasies - it truly was the wild west. When El Paso Distilling sought to create their inaugural release, they wanted to capture this infamous time for El Paso through an indulgent vodka brand. Inspired by vintage liquor decanters, a pentagon-shaped bottle was created that feels strong, yet classy. The bottle features a star-shaped punt symbolizing El Paso. A minimal label featuring refined period-driven typography is incorporated as to not mask the beauty of the bottle. Finally, the bottle is finished with a custom western-inspired neck wrap and copper closure. The final bottle feels as unique and bold as the state of Texas itself, positioning El Paso Distillery at the forefront of the premium vodka market.

Design Bridge Shanghai create disruptive design for Starbucks Mooncakes
Design balances bold disruption with cultural sensitivity to achieve standout and appeal to the next generation of Chinese consumers during the Mid-Autumn festival.

Shanghai, September 18th 2018: Design Bridge Shanghai has created a bold new graphic identity and packaging for Starbucks Mooncakes to build emotional connections with younger consumers across China. The new packaging uses a striking colour palette to disrupt traditional design codes while remaining culturally relevant, achieving crucial standout in the market during the Mid-Autumn festival, one of the most important Chinese festivals of the year.

Tom Gilbert, Creative Director of Design Bridge Shanghai, commented, "The Mid-Autumn festival is an annual harvest celebration centred around the moon and people coming together. Sharing mooncakes with your family and loved ones is an integral part of the festival, so it’s really important that your brand’s mooncakes stand out. Our challenge was to bring something new and exciting to the market that disrupted tradition whilst remaining culturally relevant and true to the Starbucks brand.”

Design Bridge’s familiarity with local traditions and intuitive understanding of the Starbucks brand allowed them to take risks that others may not have dared to. For example, they chose a strikingly contemporary colour palette of lime green, rich orange and purple that challenges traditional design cues yet appeals to younger audiences seeking something new.

This has been balanced with a sensitivity to the cultural traditions of the festival. For example, the Chinese saying of “人月两团圆”, which translates to “The moon and the people are one”, inspired the creative idea throughout the project; bringing the moon, people and Starbucks together in one design. The packaging features circular ‘wood-cut’ designs, inspired by intricate hand-carved wooden mooncake moulds, which tessellate to make new circular patterns when boxes are displayed side-by-side. Meanwhile a menu card inside each box displays the two halves together as one. These details symbolise the idea of people gathering together with their loved ones during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Tom Gilbert, Creative Director of Design Bridge, commented “Creating a design that combines cultural sensitivity and bold design choices has enabled us to create a genuinely distinctive offer for Starbucks in China. Our design adds something truly unique to the tradition of sharing mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn festival and enables Starbucks to build deeper emotional connections with a younger group of consumers."

Starbucks Mooncakes is the first project to launch from Design Bridge’s Shanghai Studio, which opened earlier this year. The mooncakes are in store now, ready for the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 24th.

Design: Robot Food
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Vocation Brewery
Location: Leeds, UK
Packaging Contents: Beer
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Aluminium

With three world class collaborations that push brewing boundaries the Hebden Bridge Based Brewery turned to strategic brand design agency Robot Food to serve up visual flavour.

Partnering with Manchester’s Chorlton Brewery Co, Hull’s Atom Beers and New Zealand’s Yeastie Boys, Vocation wanted to bring something fresh to beer lovers everywhere. Each exciting collaboration demanded a design to suit and Robot Food were asked to deliver.

Having worked with the brand from the beginning across a number of projects, Robot Food looked to balance Vocation’s brand identity with graphics inspired by the beers themselves.

Ben Brears, Senior Designer at Robot Food explains, “we used the ampersand from our original brand creation with Vocation to represent the collaborations. Acting as a template to keep a constant visual throughout the range, it alters to reflect each new pairing and flavour that comes with each new brew.”

On Vocation & Chorlton’s ‘Sour Smash’ Brears states, “the bold interpretation of the ampersand here, was inspired by the explosion of tropical and citrus flavours of the Sour Smash. We dialled up the sour with a punchy colour palette and explosive visuals.”

Atom Beers celebrate the science behind the brew. With their focus firmly grounded in the knowledge of brewing, Robot Food created a blue print design for the ampersand which reflects both Atom’s focus on science and Vocation’s forward-thinking attitude to brewing.

The most recent flavour pairing with long-distance friends Yeastie Boys crafted the Waffle and Blueberry Breakfast Stout. Brears explains, “this beer you could drink for breakfast demanded a mouth-watering design, so the ampersand template was transformed into a delicious waffle, good enough to eat, and drizzled with blueberry jam.”

Cans have already flown off shelves but grab yourself the Waffle and Blueberry Breakfast Stout while it’s still hot.
