Bob Martin, the UK’s leading pet care brand, tasked us to reinvigorate their fish food range to compete with category leaders.

We began by observing tropical fish in their environment, leading us to conclude that no fish food brands on the market accurately reflect the nature and dynamism of the fish through their packaging.

Our design transports the consumer underwater to celebrate the colour and beauty of tropical fish. Using photography of characterful fish we reflect their sprightliness and the relationships between different fish groups to create a visual aquarium on shelf.

КOMETA

Creative Agency: Unicorn Studio Moscow
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Kometa Spring Water
Location: Russia
Packaging Contents: Water
Packaging Materials: Plastic

Unicorn Studio Moscow has created a packaging design for "КOMETA" spring water.

"Комета" (eng.: Comet) is a new Russian brand of drinking water produced for the domestic and international markets. "Комета" is a very apt name for an international brand: it's cyrillic logo can be read and understood by virtually anyone, there's no language barrier.

High tech purification system and laser quality control ensure an exceptional level of water purity – this positioning is disclosed in the slogan "Starlight clean water".

Our objective was clear: package must be instantly recognizable and easily remembered. To achieve this, we have chosen a simple, minimalistic image – a silver star. It symbolizes everything at once: pureness, technology, space-level quality, and in addition, it resembles one of the most well-known emblems of Russia in the world.

Our star visually looks like the stars of Moscow Kremlin towers. These illustrious design objects built in the first half of the twentieth century have always inspired us. Our star has an elaborate internal structure, filled with an array of details, but despite this, the label looks concise. "Комета" logo is easy to remember and recognize, even if you do not memorize the name immediately. This product can be described in one sentence: "Buy water in a bottle with a silver star" and this distinguishes the product from it's competitors on the store shelf.

But how is the star image connected with the name "Комета", shouldn't a comet have a tail? In our case, it's just an unusual perspective - our comet flies face forward to the viewer, it's shining tail is only visible as a halo of sparks =)

Space theme is continued in the design of the bottle, for which we chose plastic in saturated dark blue shade, that reminds us of the color of deep space.

As a result, we have a style that can be called "retro-futurism": it is not a modern high-tech, but rather retro science fiction, which refers to the past era when space exploration was a romantic dream of mankind. It is a simple design – pure as starlight.

Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey

Creative Agency: ButterflyCannon
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Bulleit Bourbon
Location: London

Bulleit Bourbon is a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, with a high-rye content and iconic frontier inspired bottle. Bulleit came to us to create a new outer pack which would look disruptive on shelf whilst still in keeping with the brand’s straight-talking and authentic character.

The solution was to package the bottle in a customised canvas Lewis Bag; a small sack with triple-stitched seams which when pounded with a mallet is perfect for creating the crushed ice, integral to making Bulleit’s signature serve, The Bulleit Mint Julep. Made from 16oz canvas, the bag features a magnetic closure to retain the iconic bottle shape, detailed with oversized, hollow brass rivets inspired by the brand’s utilitarian brand universe.

The bottle’s branding is echoed in the layout of the bag’s screen-printed graphics and crooked embossed leather label and as a finishing touch, uncoated cardboard tags, held on a leather strap include instructions on how to make a Kentucky Mint Julep, the most popular serve in the brand’s home of Louisville, along with a personal message from Bulleit’s founder Tom Bulleit.

The packaging reflects Bulleit’s no-nonsense attitude, sticking around long after the last drop of Kentucky whiskey has gone, gently reminding the consumer to go get another bottle!

FAZE Effects (Student Project)

Designer: Collin Garcia
Project Type: Student Project
School: University of Wisconsin - Stout
Course: Product and Packaging Graphics
Tutor: Nagesh Shinde
Location: Menomonie, WI, USA
Packaging Contents: Effect Pedals
Packaging Materials: Folding board, modeling foam, acrylic, adhesive paper

Most effect pedal brands have a very static approach to the design, with few standing out as having a personality that complements the vibrancy of the medium. This is why I developed a brand that reciprocates the energetic nature of the guitar effect pedal. This is done through dynamic packaging and bold illustrations.

The idea behind FAZE is taking the sensation of sound and shaping it into a tangible experience. FAZE is abstracted from the word "phase", which is not only a type of guitar effect, but literally means "the appearance or aspect in which a thing of varying modes or conditions manifests itself to the eye or mind", yielding the brand's core concept and its connection to sound effects.

Each package showcases the pedal through a museum-style display window, which calls attention to the design of each pedal. Effect pedals are meant to be artifacts that people keep and protect, and the package design reflects this through simple durable boxes that can be reused for FAZE or other pedals after their initial use. The names and illustrations for each pedal were inspired by playing/listening to each effect and responding to them symbolically and aesthetically. This creates another level of personal connection for the user; to inspire. FAZE's goal is to turn the simple pedal into a work of art itself, to reflect the quality and craft that goes into creating it and the sonic art it produces.

TABU in hungarian means TABOO

Basic concept of the label: TABOO is present in our daily lives, an integral part of our lives, but we do not talk about these, will not be publicly displayed even tight circle of friends either. TABU: object or creature or concept to mention the ban on touch; integrity, holiness.

This wine is Schieber Winery's secret, hidden items, which can only be seen in the exceptional, may touch and taste. This item is the winery's flagship wine, which offers by some Michelin star restaurants in Hungary.

I designed a label for this name and ideology that shows this hidden secret. Everybody knows taboos, everybody has taboos, but we don't necessarily want them to see clearly. But some taboos may honor to see, to touch, to taste... prerogative like this wine.

Mr. Bones Milkshakes (Student Project)

Designer: Jaime Guisasola
Project Type: Student Project
School: BAU School of Design, Barcelona
Course: Master Degree in Branding and Packaging
Tutor: Philip Stanton
Location: Barcelona, Spain
Packaging Contents: Milkshakes
Packaging Materials: Tetra Pak

Mr. Bones is a fictional brand of milkshakes. It is an experiment on how to apply illustration to packaging design and branding.

The original idea to create Mr. Bones, both brand and character, was to represent the playfulness of the flavours and the strength of the milk. This is why I decided to create a skeleton character as the brand's mascot.

The main elements, the character, the brand, the flavours, the texts... are all hand-drawn. This is because the main target of the product are children, so the brand and the character should be attractive to them. Having this in mind, I used a "glow in the dark" ink to highlight all the graphic elements, to extend the life of the pack, and to make the customers keep it once the product is finished.

This project was made under the tutelage of Philip Stanton at BAU Design School Barcelona.

Designer: Dang Vo
Project Type: Student Project
School: UQAM
Course: Packaging
Tutor: Sylvain Allard
Location: Montreal, Canada
Packaging Contents: Cannabis Cigare
Packaging Materials: Cardstock

THE CHALLENGE
The interest in this project for design, is the fact that it is a product free from graphic codes. Because it was never packed, or marketed, cannabis is a virgin product on a design point of view. We have approached the product with no bias. Except for some visual references related to the world of reggae and a certain underground culture, cannabis appears blank and available to all forms of experimentation in packaging design and branding.

THE STORY
From function to design every aspect of this artifact of our market society are studied, compared and analyzed. When you think about it, packaging tells the story of our society, our lifestyle, our habits, and our values, etc. According to Greek mythology, Apollo is the god of music, poetry and healing. The cigar has a small amount of savita cannabis type which tend to be uplifting and creative with celebrally effects. The idea is to introduce a new cannabis product in an elevated term. The Apollo is used as branding image for the product because he illustrates the artistic life style. Such as drinking wine, today smoking cannabis could be considered as a form of "Art de vivre".

Creative Agency: MANÎ Diseño estratégico

Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Cooperativa San Sebastián
Location: Spain
Packaging Contents: Oil, Spain, Organic, Selection
Packaging Materials: Glass

San Sebastián el Romeral offers two product lines: organic and selection extra virgin olive oil; both coming from a selection of the best olives. To do so, different varieties are used, such as cornicabra (from the region), picual and arbequina.

The oil’s name refers to the location of the crop, the mountains of El Romeral (La Mancha, Spain).

The purpose of this project is “to place the oil on the map” and to present the oil of this region through the design of a treasure map, since oil is known as liquid gold.

The edges of the labels are finished with the grids of a map, the legend of the names and the references. In it, the wood grains have a direct symbolic relation with the topographical lines of a map.

In order to distinguish between both varieties, different colour tones have been chosen: green for organic oils and brown for selection oils.

As with cartographic designs, the scale has been used to specify the content of the different containers’ sizes.

Finally, to enhance the message, items such as the cross that points where the treasure is and “El Tesoro de la Mancha” have been stamped in gold.

Illustrator: Ewan Leckie
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Loch Lomond Brewery
Location: Scotland, UK
Packaging Contents: Craft Ale, Beer, Cider, Lager
Packaging Materials: clear pvc sticker labels, razed inks , embossed effect

We were tasked to produced a new range of contemporary labels to add to Loch Lomond Breweries classic range my:creative created back in 2011. The new range offered more experimental flavors and interesting hop combinations. Loch Lomond Brewery needed to communicate this in the styling of the bottle packaging and pump clips while still keeping the brand strong and recognizable.

The solutions was to stylize the iconic mountain range that surrounds Loch Lomond and use it as a panoramic backdrop round the length of the bottle. Overlayed with bold colours and strong to the point typography to give the ale the best possible shelf presence. We selected razed inks to give a embossed effect that makes the bottle more tactile to hold. This was then printed on to clear PVC stock so the glass bottle and liquid would show through the knockout of the print.

Photography: Sean Fenzl
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Trail Distilling
Location: Oregon City, Oregon
Packaging Contents: Gin, Vodka
Packaging Materials: Glass, paper

For Trail Distilling, we created a label system with a rugged elegance that evokes Oregon City’s beautiful urban spaces amidst a powerful natural landscape.

The main label is composed of two distinct areas: the wood grain vertical area, acting as the background and unifying the product line, features the iconic Mt. Hood; the black-and-white horizontal area, taking the foreground and wrapping its wings around the bottle’s sides, brings individual character to each product with custom illustrations. This combination approach allowed for complex and detailed edges, such as the trillium flower’s extended sepals and the spaces between the bridge’s pillars, that would have been impossible with a diecut. An extra dimension is added with spot UV popping the foreground elements out.

Distinctive Art Deco borders and filigree play against the illustrations, and for a finishing touch, the cap strap and neck strap echo the criss-cross motif of the main label, reversing the colour composition for balance.
