Design: WonderWild
Copy Writer: Liz Renner
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Dr. Smoothie
Location: Lincoln, United States
Packaging Contents: Smoothie mix
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Plastic
Printing Process: Digital printing

We worked with the Dr. Smoothie brand of Bevolution Group to refresh their logo of 20+ years and develop all new packaging for their 6 different product lines. When it came to the logo and visual identity, we knew we wanted to stay with the color red and within the script family for type in order to take advantage of the brand equity that had been built in the marketplace for the past 20 years. We also knew the brand deserved custom handlettering, not a pre-built font.

One of the primary drivers for how the refreshed brand would look and feel was the Brand Archetype of Explorer. Throughout our discovery process, we collectively decided the Explorer persona best represented the ethos of the brand: adventurous, resilient, upbeat, non-conformist and independent. This proved to be a cornerstone of our voice and design decisions throughout the project.

Design: INPIN DESIGN
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Armigo CO.,LTD
Location: Kaohsiung City
Packaging Contents: Hair Dyeing
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Paper
Printing Process: Foil stamping

Market Positioning:
The client has been involved in the marketing of hair products for more than a decade and has industry and academic background in professional R&D technologies. The product itself utilizes dyeing technology with pigment extracted from turmeric plants and is a hair-coloring product developed for the demands of the black-hair dyeing group. The naming of the product wishes to be a combination of four product spirits including raw materials (turmeric), plants (nature), profession (specialist) and hair-dyeing (hair product), hence, it is named “HERBSLIGHT.” The overall brand positioning hopes to create a mature and charismatic style while emphasizing the sense of trust in natural herbal plants.

Design Strategy:
At the present, majority of similar products in the market are based on portraits of black-haired person as the packaging image, therefore we hope to have a distinction from other brands in the aspect of display. We used tumeric pictures massively to highlight the product raw materials and further chose raw paper with black cards as the base color to emphasize the main appeal of dyeing hair black, which accentuates the golden color of tumeric. At last, raw paper color is adopted for the choice of the paper box and labeling paper to highlight the product characteristics of natural mildness which is unharmful to hair quality; hot stamping is used instead of printing that metaphorizes the concept of haircare and a glowing hair after dyeing, hoping to further create the market value for the product itself.

With Right Strapping, Packaging Can be Done Effectively!

Written by Kevin Fowler, owner of Hunter Industrial Supplies.

Do you know what the best way to pack your valuable is? It’s by choosing the right strapping material. Knowing what kind of package you have will certainly help in determining what kind of strapping you need to purchase or your next move.

The following post-emphasis on certain things to consider while looking for the right strapping based on your product and application. Now there are several kinds of strapping material available around: Polyester, polypropylene, steel, nylon, and of course tools. The physical package characteristics are an important piece to figure out which product is best for you. Now there are three elements to consider: corners, load integrity, weight.

Characteristics
  • Corners- Being one of the most important characteristics of selecting the right strapping material is the corners. In case, you have a rigid load such as steel blanks, it’s unwise to use plastic strapping directly. These sharp metal edges will just cut right through the plastic without edge protections. However, edge protectors keep the plastic or steel straps off the actual package so it doesn't cause damage.
  • Load Integrity- Popularly known as stability, this characteristic affects the strap selection. There are times when loads are made from numerous packages that tend to separate. One of the best ways is to fix this to unitize them with strapping. Straps are meant to provide the stability needed to help secure products. In fact, they also help in keeping things solid, for example- stackable loads.
  • Weight- Do you know that every piece of the strap has a specific tensile strength or break strength, that’s the stress as soon as it breaks or disfigures on the permanent basis? One of the best examples for this is a 15,000 lb. load of steel products wouldn't be strapped with light duty poly straps. This simply won’t work as it won’t be able to hold and break strength that could hold the load together. Another example to consider is- heavy duty steel straps holding together fragile products. In this case, chances are there the strap itself could damage the product instead of protecting it. Always pay attention to a strap's break strength when choosing between different products.

Time to understand the differences in the packages
  • Rigid or Self-stacking- These packages are the ones whose load dimensions remain constant before, during and after strapping.
  • Expanding- These packages are the ones whose dimensions become larger right after being strapped.
  • Shrinking- These packages have dimensions that become smaller after strapping.
  • Compressible- Those packages with dimensions which become smaller right after strapping but automatically rebounds as soon as the strapping is removed.
  • Combination- These packages will compress when strapping is applied or when products are stacked on top and will automatically rebound when the strapping or top-level products are removed.

Steel sheets are the best example for rigid or self-stacking loads that remain constant before, during and after being strapped. As a result, they require strapping that can be applied with high initial tension and that will retain high tension during storage, handling, and shipment. Cotton bales can be considered as the best example for expanding load. These kinds of loads are initially compressed in a baler. After this, they get strapped since the load rebounds significantly when compression is removed. Here the key is that the right strapping must be able to withstand the high pressure.

Shrinking loads needs strapping that shrinks as the loads get smaller. Here a cube of bricks stacked and strapped together would be an example of a shrinking load because as the bricks rub together during transport, they become smaller. In order to compensate for such shrinkage, the strap must have excellent elongation and elongation recovery properties.

A task:
Ehrmann's brand Epica is widely recognized in the market and is valued by the buyer. The company Ehrmann decided to release under the legendary brand the line of drinking yoghurts with exotic tastes. Design: Clare Lynch
Project Type: Produced, Commercial Work
Client: Stan Kuznetsov, Inter Europol S.A.
Location: Dublin, Ireland
Packaging Contents: Bread (Polish)
Packaging Substrate / Materials: Plastic
Printing Process: Flexography

POLSKI Bread was created by authentic Polish bakery Inter Europol, exclusively for Tesco consumers. Known for their taste, purity, and authenticity, they're the largest clean-label bakery in Poland, producing real slow-rise sourdough bread and other bakery products using traditional stone-baking methods for over 30 countries worldwide.

The brief was to design a new packaging brand for a range of Polish bread to be launched in Tesco stores across the UK. The main target audience is consumers who love Polish food, therefore it was important to ensure that the branding made a clear, instant connection to Poland, for strong shelf stand-out.

Some factors considered to answer this brief include:
  • Using the colour palette of the Polish flag (with colour variants per flavour) / the use of white to represent its' clean label benefit.
  • Packaging shape designed to reveal the bread's natural goodness.
  • Featuring the Polish bird mascot – with wings formed from grain, a bread-shaped body and a baker's dough-shaped hat.
  • Simplified folk-art style 'Wycinanki' illustration.
  • Traditional Polish typography in a modern style, containing an earthy, grain texture signifying the bread's wholesomeness.
  • Consistency across four different shaped packs, for strong brand impact.

The result is engaging design, carefully tailored to their target audience.
